The escalating cost of animal feed over the past decade has significantly burdened both commercial and subsistence farmers. In Malawi, the Food and Nutrition Security Program, operating in Dedza and Salima districts, addresses this challenge while enhancing household resilience and dietary diversity. This is done by distributing local chickens.To mitigate the financial strain of purchasing expensive feed, which would undermine the program's "do no harm" principle by creating a new economic burden, the program has developed a sustainable approach: utilizing readily available, locally sourced materials often considered waste to create nutritionally dense chicken feed. This initiative empowers communities by providing a cost-effective and environmentally conscious solution to poultry nutrition.
